DuPont Competition Honors Packaging

GlaxoSmithKline's Advair Diskus inhalation powder dispenser won a gold award.

The 16th DuPont Awards Competition took place August 8, 2003, in Wilmington, DE. The competition honors industry innovations that use plastic packaging materials in food and nonfood categories. Entries are judged on criteria such as degree of innovation, breadth of application, impact on industry or consumers, and marketing innovation of the packaged product. Entries need not include a DuPont product to be eligible.

In the non-food category, B. Braun Medical Inc. won a gold award for its Duplex drug delivery system flexible plastic IV container. The system is a customizable multi-compartment flexible plastic IV bag that stores unit doses of diluent and drug powder separately in the same container. The packaging uses a blend of polypropylene and thermoplastic elastomer on the port and container front as well as on the back along with foil and PET. GlaxoSmithKline also won a gold award for the Advair Diskus inhalation powder easy-to-use dispenser. The device is breath activated with a dose counter that counts down to zero. The design of the injection-molded dispenser contains dry powder medication. The labeled dispenser is disk-shaped with components containing polypropylene, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, polycarbonate, and acetal. The medication is contained in a blister strip of doses consisting of a cold-forming laminate.

Pechiney Plastic Packaging was one of four silver award winners in the nonfood category. The company won an award for its desiccating sealant film moisture-barrier pouch. The package materials include PET, extrusion lamination PE, foil, extrusion PE, and a desiccating sealant film that extends product shelf life and inhibits mois-ture damage. Rexam Health- care Flexibles won a silver award for its Core-Peel medical pouch. This multilayer polyolefin coextrusion film employs the patented Rexam Core- Peel technology to provide a fiber-free peel when sealing a Tyvek pouch.

Rollprint Packaging Products Inc.'s printed chevron pouch for a cholangiogram catheter was also a winner. The pouch uses Tyvek for the uncoated top web and a bottom web material extrusion coated with Rollprint Allegro T peel-able sealant.

The fourth company to win an award in this category was Sealed Air Corp. The company won the award for its inflatable bubble wrap packaging system, which provides cushioning that automatically inflates and dispenses þ-in. height barrier bubble material.

Pechinery Plastic Packaging also won a special citation award in the non-food category for its single-dose applicator pouch. The Del pouch is used in the healthcare industry to contain hard-to-hold materials, such as ointments and creams, until the seal is broken for convenient application. The single-dose applicator with a frangible seal is a high-barrier flexible package containing a barrier layer and a protective layer of PET using a high-barrier frangible sealant film.
