On-Line Distribution Test Aids Engineers

Erik Swain

A new Web-based test to help packaging engineers simulate distribution environments should be available by the end of the year, according to the International Safe Transit Association (ISTA; East Lansing, MI).

The new test, ISTA 4AB, belongs to a new category called “enhanced simulation.” It is more detailed than general simulation tests but not as rigorous as focused simulation tests.

“Being computer-aided and Web-based, it can incorporate a great deal of ‘behind-the-scenes’ complexity without burdening the user,” said Bill Kipp, ISTA’s associate director of education. “It does require detailed knowledge of the target distribution environment, but this information is rather easily obtainable through shipment records, personal interviews, field trips, and the like. It does not demand user measurement of the distribution environment and translation into test definitions, with all the effort and expertise that entails.” Kipp, who spoke at the Dimensions.03 conference, held in March in Orlando, FL, said the core of the test is a 10-page flowchart. The first two pages take in user input about the product, the package, and the storage and transportation characteristics and hazards. The rest of the pages indicate how the program will generate the laboratory test plan based on that information.

The program, said Steve Pierce, ISTA’s associate director for testing and certification, “will cover all typical hazards using the latest available transport data.” Pierce spoke at the SouthPack conference, held in April in Atlanta.

“It will be an individualized test protocol closely following the actual pattern of distribution,” he said. “It will be powerful and easy to use.”
