Cleveland Clinic Expands Innovation Center

Earlier this month, CCF Innovations, the technology transfer and commercialization arm of the Cleveland Clinic, celebrated the dedication of the new wing of the Cleveland Clinic Innovation Center. The newly expanded facility now houses the operations of CCF Innovations, as well as start-up and early-stage life sciences companies.

The Innovation Center is a 20,000-sq-ft facility featuring eight laboratories, 25 offices, and three conference rooms. The center provides CCF equity partners and spin-off companies with laboratory and office space, as well as access to CCF’s core facilities and top staff.

The facility houses about 50 individuals and up to six companies. According to CCF, companies typically stay in the facility for 24 months and then locate into space adjacent to the CCF campus.

Housed in the new portion of the facility are operations for the following start-up and emerging companies.

• PeriTec Biosciences, a Cleveland Clinic spin-off company that develops peritoneum-coated stents and patches.

• Symphony Medical Inc., a spin-off company that develops novel treatments for atrial fibrillation.

• SDG Inc., a Cleveland Clinic equity partner that combines nanotechnology and cell-receptor targeting for improved pharmaceuticals.

Housed in the older half of the facility are the following companies.

• PrognostiX Inc., a spin-off diagnostics company that markets the CardioMPO test kit for in vitro diagnostic use and has other products based on inflammatory biomarkers in the pipeline.

• Frantz Biomarkers, a Cleveland Clinic equity partner focused on discovering and commercializing novel indicators of biological states—biomarkers—in circulating blood and other biological fluids.

• Volcano Therapeutics, a Cleveland Clinic equity partner that manufactures intravascular ultrasound catheters and functional measurement guidewires used to diagnose and assess diseases of the coronary and peripheral vasculature.
