The Massachusetts Medical Device Industry Council (Boston) this month honored six local medical technology companies as part of its first-ever Medical Device Innovation Awards program. The program is designed to recognize novel medical technologies that contribute to improved patient outcomes, enhanced medical procedures, and reduced healthcare costs.

Awards were given in three categories, based on company revenue: start-up companies with annual revenue of $4.9 million or less, early-stage companies with between $5 million and $10 million in annual revenue, and established companies with more than $10 million in annual revenue. The award recipients and their winning products are as follows.

• Start-up company winner: Confluent Surgical Inc. (Waltham, MA) for its DuraSeal dural sealant.

• Start-up company winner: NxStage Medical Inc. (Lawrence, MA) for its NxStage System One portable dialysis machine.

• Start-up company honorable mention: Solx Inc. (Boston) for its GMS gold micro-shunt.

• Early-stage company winner: TissueLink Medical Inc. (Dover, NH) for the Aquamantys system, a surgical system designed to reduce blood loss.

• Established company winner: Cytyc Corp. (Marlborough, MA) for its ThinPrep imaging system for screening and diagnosis of cervical cancer.

• Established company honorable mention: Philips Medical Systems Inc. (Andover, MA) for the S5-1 transducer for ultrasonic imaging.

“New England companies are designing and producing some of the world’s most advanced medical products,” said Tom Sommer, president of MassMedic. “The awards recognize six local companies with innovative technologies that are improving the quality and cost-effectiveness of healthcare both here in Massachusetts and across the globe.”

The awards, sponsored by medtech manufacturer Smith & Nephew and law firm Nixon Peabody LLP, were presented earlier this month during MassMedic’s annual investor conference, held in Boston.
