Cleveland Clinic Turns Spotlight on OrthopedicsThe 2005 Cleveland Clinic Medical Innovation Summit: Bench to Bedside and Back, being held October 24–26, will immerse industry professionals in three days of discussion and analysis of the latest trends and developments in the orthopedic sector. The summit, now in its third year, will convene more than 800 industry executives, investors, and clinicians at the Cleveland Clinic, where featured topics will range from new products that are shaping the orthopedic market to trends in federal policy and their impact on the sector. “The orthopedic and spine market is growing by more than 20% per year,” says Christopher Coburn, executive director of CCF Innovations, the technology transfer and commercialization arm of the Cleveland Clinic. “With the advance of new orthopedic technologies and procedures, including new spine implants, there is increased priority on the development and cost of these technologies and their benefit to patients. “The summit will cover shifts in clinical approaches and how that translates into new areas of potential opportunity for folks on the private-equity side,” he adds. Orthopedics has been a major focus of the Cleveland Clinic this year. In February, the organization announced that it had formed a 10-year alliance with Stryker Corp. (Kalamazoo, MI) under which the medical device company will support the clinic in the advancement and testing of image-guided surgery systems and other sophisticated orthopedic surgical technologies, with the ultimate goal of developing “the orthopedic operating rooms of the future.”
When the partnership was initially announced, Cleveland Clinic reported that three orthopedic operating rooms, to be equipped with arthroscopy equipment and operative navigation systems for computer-assisted knee- and hip-replacement procedures, were under construction at its facility. Because of the aging of the U.S. population, the organization estimates that demand for these procedures will increase 10 to 15% annually for the next 40 years. Stephen MacMillan, CEO of Stryker, will be on hand at the summit, where he will speak on the topic of ensuring the flow of innovation in orthopedics—a chance for attendees to get a taste of where the Stryker-Clinic alliance is headed, says Coburn.
Also among the speakers at this year’s summit will be Lester Crawford, DVM, PhD, newly confirmed FDA commissioner, and Newt Gingrich, former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and founder of the Center for Health Transformation (Washington, DC).
