E-Z-EM Inc. (Lake Success, NY), a developer of contrast agents for gastrointestinal radiology, has named Paul S. Echenberg chairman of the board. Echenberg has served as a director of E-Z-EM since 1987 and chairman of the board of E-Z-EM Canada Inc. (Anjou, QC) since 1994. He has also held posts at Surgical Dynamics, AngioDynamics Inc., and Twinpak Inc., and more recently served at investment firms Schroders & Associates Canada Inc. and Eckvest Equity Ltd. Echenberg replaces Howard S. Stern, who cofounded E-Z-EM in 1962 and has been an advocate for improved screening for gastrointestinal diseases. Stern will remain a member of the board.

As a matter of good corporate governance, the board of directors of Zevex International Inc. (Salt Lake City) has decided to separate the responsibilities of chairman of the board and chief executive officer. Former chair and current president and CEO David J. McNally will remain a member of the board. Board member John T. Lemley will become the new chairman. Lemley has more than 30 years of experience in executive, financial, and operations management. He has held executive positions at companies such as Medtronic Inc., Hewlett-Packard, Evans & Sutherland Computer Corp., and Megahertz Holding Corp.

Read

Russ Read has been hired as executive director of the National Center for the Biotechnology Workforce, a partnership of five U.S. community colleges that is working to develop curricula and training models for biotechnology workers. Read is CEO and founder of Hope Pharma Consulting and was previously CEO and president of Kucera Pharmaceutical Co.

Poon

Johnson & Johnson (J&J; New Brunswick, NJ) has named Christine A. Poon, current worldwide chairman for medicines and nutritionals and a member of the executive committee, as a company vice chairman. In addition, the nominating and corporate governance committee of J&J's board of directors has nominated her for election to the board at the company's annual meeting in April. Poon joined J&J in 2000, serving first as company group chairman for pharmaceuticals, and then as worldwide chairman for the division. She previously served at Bristol-Myers Squibb for 15 years.

Johnson

Orthosoft Holdings Inc. (Montreal), a designer and developer of surgical navigation systems, has appointed Pierre Marc Johnson lead director of the board of directors. In the newly created position he is responsible for managing the board and acting as liaison between board members and company management. Johnson has been a director of Orthosoft since it went public in 2004. He is a former premier of Quebec and holds director positions at a number of other corporations.

Vorwald

Phillip Vorwald, former managing director of Delphi Medical Systems and a vice president at Becton Dickinson Biosciences (BD Biosciences), has joined Guava Technologies Inc. (Hayward, CA) as vice president for worldwide sales. At BD Biosciences, Vorwald worked in business operations for Europe/Middle East, Asia/Pacific/Latin America, and in strategic planning in the United States. "Phil has an exceptional track record of achievement. He has experience in the very-fast-growing cell biology market for life science research and diagnostics in five continents around the world," said Rajen Dalal, president and CEO of Guava.

Allard

Fujirebio Diagnostics Inc. (Malvern, PA), a company that specializes in producing in vitro diagnostic products for oncology, has hired W. Jeffrey Allard, PhD, as vice president and chief scientific officer. In his position, Allard, a biochemist and immunologist with more than 25 years of experience, will aid in the selection of new products and will oversee Fujirebio's network of in-licensing institutions. He will also be in charge of the company's research and development, clinical and regulatory affairs, and process engineering staff.

Morris

Lipomics Technologies Inc. (West Sacramento, CA), a producer of tools for assessing and understanding complex metabolic conditions using lipid metabolite analysis, has appointed Macdonald (Don) Morris, PhD, as chief technology officer and vice president of bioinformatics. Morris was a founding scientist at Affymetrix (Santa Clara, CA) and worked at the company from 1992 to 1998 as lead scientist, then senior scientist. Between 1998 and 2002, he served in various director roles at Incyte Genomics (Wilmington, DE). Before arriving at Lipomics he was vice president of informatics at Expression Diagnostics (XDx; South San Francisco, CA).

D'Ambruso

Caron D'Ambruso has joined Scion Cardio-Vascular Inc. (Miami), a manufacturer of interventional cardiology products, as vice president of sales and marketing. D'Ambruso holds a degree in marketing and economics from Harvard University, where she graduated with honors in 1989. Prior to joining Scion, D'Ambruso was vice president of sales and marketing at Kensey Nash Corp. (Exton, PA). She also served as director of marketing for Cordis Neurovascular (Miami) before the company's merger with Johnson & Johnson.
